Hope everybody enjoyed safe and magical sleighing over the past holiday season! I spent some time with family and upon my return, I discovered a few unexpected gifts in my mailbox. Vicky sent the following FYI:

Hi.

I was meandering around Hanson sites when I surfed onto yours. I clicked on the 'Secrets and Lies' section and saw under the list of 'Things You'll Never Know': What really happened to Wickett. Actually I do know what happened, when Hanson was here in Toronto and were being interviewed on MuchMusic they did say what happened to Wickett. I think the question was 'What was the craziest thing a fan and ever done to get your attention' and Isaac replied 'A dog.' He then went on the say that Wickett had past away because she had eaten some rat poison she had found in their barn (yes barn.) Zac went on to re-enacting the scenario where they found Wickett and used the car's spark plugs to try and shock her back to life, until Taylor gave him the 'look' and nudged him. So if you have had the patience to read my long and arduous e-mail up to here: kudos and now you know what happened to Wickett.

Thanks Vicky!! Also, Kat hooked us up with a little-known fact about Kate Hudson at 24/7. Gracias Kat! And I couldn't resist adding Reese's letter to the Postcards section. I think you will agree that her enthusiasm for both Hanson and her city is irresistible in this account of her Hanson story: Meet Me in St. Louis. Reese, you're awesome!

Hanson's Yahoo chat last Friday contained some of the most informed fan questions of all time. I learned more about Taylor's t-shirts than I had ever known before--and this information was from the fan questions, not the band's answers! ::grin:: And, the guys' holiday sledding video is so much fun! Who knew Oklahoma had black diamond slopes?!! (c;

My good friend, Amanda, reviewed some band-related books. If you feel as if your reading list needs some sprucing up, check out Out of Our Realm. And finally, a movie recommendation: if you haven't seen Finding Forrester, go! Of course, you're aware of the Gus Van Sant connection, but it's so much more than that. I can't tell you on how many levels I connected with this film . . . literature, the teaching of writing, race relations . . . incredible! Caveat: if you're used to MTV-type pacing, stay home or go see Ashton's car movie instead. (c;

December 23, 2000
If the Hanson/Andy Warhol connection isn't immediately apparent to you, check out Serena's contribution to 24/7.   It's an early Christmas gift . . . Thanks Serena!

I heard Chuck Berry's version of Run Run Rudolph last night. It was like viewing an original, well, Andy Warhol I guess. (c;

December 22, 2000
Did I ever tell you that when our family moved to New Jersey from Virginia, people kept asking me if I wanted to go "sleigh riding" and I was so jazzed because I really wanted to go "dashing through the snow?" Well, as it turns out, people in that part of the country refer to wooden and plastic boards with runners that one or two people slide down a hill on, as "sleighs" rather than "sleds" as I usually called them. Anyway, I share this story to wish you all the happiest of holidays, where ever you are . . . and in whatever way you decide to celebrate them!! If you happen to find yourself in a one-horse open sleigh or the kind that is pulled by reindeer, drop me a line because I would love to live vicariously through your experiences!! (c; All these things and more . .. I wish for you and the ones you care about the most! My 1 year old niece, loves to sing along to Hanson . . . she echoes them whenever she hears them sing "Bay-bee" . . . (Merry Christmas, Baby . . . bay-bee) it's one of her favorite words! So sweet!

Also, recently my friend made an off-hand remark about the ending to Snowed In when she heard it for the first time. It gave me fresh insight into Isaac and Mackenzie's little exchange about the record player. I originally thought it was just an example of Mack being a curious 3-year-old, but I missed the cultural significance of the conversation. My friend said, "Oh I get it, his brother is too young to know what vinyl is. He's discovering it for the first time, but giving it his own interpretation."  Merry Christmas!

My fascination with the St. Louis Arch was heightened by a Discovery Channel program that examined its amazing conception and construction. Did you know, that each side was built simultaneously and that the final piece was the one that linked them together? There was some suspense about its placement due to wind conditions and also because, if either side was off its calculations by even an inch, it would have thrown the entire project off by several feet at the top. Whoa!

If you're interested in more interesting facts about the remarkable city that gives us The Arch, Reese @ Listen Please can fill you in! She reminded us that Hanson mentioned in a hanson.net chat during the tour in St. Louis, that their trip to The Arch was one of the coolest things they had done lately. Reese, a virtual yet valuable spokesperson for her hometown, also mentioned that Chuck Berry and Sheryl Crow are natives. A huge thanks to Reese for this cool addition to living and her enthusiasm for St. Louis!

December 18, 2000
Dang it! How do those Hansons remain so articulate year after year! They must use more than 10% of their . . . well, you know the rest. Anyway, Isaac Hanson is the quote of the day in CDNow's year end, "Say What" series. (c; So maybe CDNow didn't quite catch the significance of Isaac's deep thought . . . Is it any wonder fans stay so loyal?!!

Decmeber 17, 2000
What do Zac, Mr. Hanson and the president-elect of the U.S. have in common? The same middle name. And you wondered who "W" was? (c;

December 10, 2000
Oh man, a few observations on the new Save Me video @ launch.com

And, just before the Arlington concert, we ran into Ashley Greyson who mentioned that the guys were thinking about performing Never Let Go, a beautiful song they had written, but never released. He joked that it had not even ended up on Napster yet. ::grin::  We did not hear that song that evening. After four months of waiting, the band has just posted a clip of their performance of this gentle ballad @ hanson.net from a show in Minas Centro: Bello Horizonte, Brazil. The Real Video has a haunting, but incredible underwater sound quality . . . due to my slow modem or the crowd feedback, who knows? But it's just . . . Whoa!

December 8, 2000
I'm at a recent Holiday gathering and we're exchanging the infamous white elephant gifts . . . My gift to give: boomerangs. The gift I received: Silly String. The subtlety of Hanson 24/7. ::rolling eyes at myself:: (c;

In a recent Chatroom article, the guys answer a question by mentioning that a tatto says, "the plane . . . the plane." I puzzled over this phrase for awhile until some friends shed light on it at a Sunday buffet. (c; On that note, I have received MOE 10 and have posted my obscure reactions to it. Hope you enjoy!

December 3, 2000
What a crazy time! Final projects, exams . . . holiday shopping! Good thing December offers good music to soundtrack these insane weeks before Christmas (if you celebrate)!

Anyway, a huge thanks to the Hanson Gazette.  I just heard about their sweet gesture of recognition for riveronline.net! Wow! I think it is fitting to honor Shelley, who has given this domain her vision and heart!  You're the best! Of course, I must also acknowledge my colleagues whom I have come to respect and appreciate for their wisdom and humor!  All this gushing may leave you wondering if I have already dipped into the holiday eggnog . . . I guess, you'll never know.   ::grin::

Finally, I've posted updated pictures on the table of contents. And yet, I have an unexplainable sentimental attachment to my old layout. So I've created the gallery to pay its respects. (c;

November 23, 2000
Happy Thanksgiving to the Americans! This is my favorite holiday, not only because of the food but because you always have Christmas to look forward to (if you celebrate that) after it's over.

On Wednesday, I made my friend stay at the Writing Center after we closed to translate the Spanish interview in Gente magazine, posted @ HitzDiary (Thanks Cathy!!). She isn't a fan of the band, but she was chuckling as she read Hanson's responses to the questions. A few notable moments included the writer's observation that allegedly Isaac had requested that someone purchase a box of Cuban cigars for him before they left Argentina. Taylor said that American coffee is very bitter and that the coffee in Argentina was incredible! Zac got firm about the girlfriend issue, halting conversation by setting down the bowl of fruit and cream he was enjoying, before responding that the band is tired of answering questions about the kind of girls they like after they tell people that they don't have girlfriends. Now that they all have girlfriends, the interviewer wanted to know how they "conquered" them (a Spanish term from the conquistador era).  They all began to break out into a love song.  Awwww . . . (c;

Not that this page is an advertisement for any particular store, but I was Christmas shopping @ Aeropostale, a store that I've always appreciated, when I suddenly heard the pounding of familiar chords from the speakers. Oh man! Could it be? Yes, it was "Everybody Knows the Claus." Suffice to say, as I lamely shuffled through a rack of pants in the back, I may or may not have been the only person in the store singing along. ::grin:: (A soapbox moment: Nothing against any other stores in the mall, including but not limited to, a certain store with black and white pictures of people only from a certain ethnic background, ironically, in various states of dress and undress . . . and believe me, nobody is pointing fingers at bands who choose to be interviewed for this store's "Parental Advisory" catalog.) Have a blessed shopping season this year! (c;

Malcom in the Middle soundtrack.

November 20, 2000
Do you ever come across one of those sites where you think, "I know someone who would love this!" If you haven't already been there, check out Lego Star Wars Trilogy. (Note: Nothing related to the band on this page.) (c;

November 19, 2000
When Laura--Bright and Beautiful Laura, the Bostonian and talented web writer who aptly titled her site with adjectives that describe both the band and herself--agreed to come out to the Midwest to see a concert with me, I was incredibly jazzed. What an honor!!   But then, I felt the weight of being able to host her properly, of representing the Midwest adequately. I mean, Boston should be heavily handicapped in a golf game of popularity with any other city. I've been to this city and it just rocks!!  (c;

Plus, my hostess duties included my sister and friend, who both got on board with the Indianapolis concert early on and they were not in the Hanson fan category . . . thus excluding them from certain rituals--like "How can I get tickets as close to the stage as possible?" Then, I realized that everybody who was coming to the Indianapolis concert with me were only connected through me. There were absolutely no other ties! We had 4 balcony seats and yet Laura was flying . . . yes, flying in the middle of a school term . . . to landlocked America to see the band. Balcony was just not going to cut it! Fifteenth row came up on the Ticketmaster screen a day before the concert, but only 2 seats were available. They were ours. Then, my sister called that night . . . this is my baby sister . . . and she asked if I would please, please sit with her. If only I didn't have to leave Laura alone in 15th row . . . if only there were 4 seats available down there . . . if only guards wouldn't notice 4 people in only 2 seats.   Well, Laura has graciously posted her impression of the concert . . . enjoy the view from 15th row. I certainly did in her impeccable account of this experience. Laura, how can I ever thank you!!! She's every bit as witty and cool as you might have thought her to be!

Noah Knows Best . . . The writers took all of the cheesiest online stories and gave them an ironic twist. The moral of the story: don't let your fascination with celebrity overcome your life, your true friendships. And about Hanson's constant protests that they're not good actors? ::smirk:: Campiness is in!! (c;

November 17, 2000
From MOE #1 . . . (a memory to mark Isaac's 20th)

"When we got Middle of Nowhere, 'Weird' was the first song to catch our eye.  We looked up the word in the dictionary and found it to mean, 'Something of magical or fantastic character.'"
-- Michelle and Amy

Happy Birthday Isaac!!

November 13, 2000
In a recent interview, Bob Weir mentions that Hanson expressed curiosity about the musician Reverend Gary Davis.  Check out this website devoted to his memory if your interests run parallel to the band's.

November 12, 2000
I've posted a page from my journal with some overwrought musings on Hanson's recent response to the girlfriend issue.  (Warning: the content contains no actual Hanson transcript, just aimless reflections.) It was time to update the jeopardy section where Hanson was still stuck answering this infamous question with, "No. You ask us that every time and it's still the same answer." Isaac is almost twenty . . . please! ::grin::

My deepest sympathy to Jonny Lang and the loss of his bassist. Jonny's colleague was struck by a car and killed on November 7, 2000. I saw both of these amazing musicians in concert last May. Whoa!

My pal, Ann, sent me the link to a recent interview with Bob Weir . . . of "The Other Ones" where he mentions Hanson. I've added it to the eyewitness section. I had seen this excerpt before, but not the link to it. Thanks Ann, you're the coolest (and I mean this)! Some housekeeping @ a hidden life, you might notice changes in the image headers for a few sections. However, this site is about vintage Hanson pictures as well as recent snaps. (c;

November 5, 2000
Oh my goodness . . . the webpage contest @ hanson.net really highlighted some winners. A hearty congratulations to Annie, Rakel and mmmiapet!!  If you don't subscribe and haven't heard yet, I would highly recommend the following sites:

all the minutes in the world could never take your place:
an indexed chronicle of Hanson's career (Comprehensive--Whoa!)

the hanional inquirer:
highly amusing spoof on all the Hanson "news that's unfit to print" (Love this site)

hanson kiiicks ass
join this (Canadian) site in support of Hanson, using a slightly edgy word

And I finally got around to adding this outstanding site to my links page. I'm in awe of Ali, mostly because she shares a name with the Karate Kid's girlfriend from the first movie ::grin:: . . . Come on Virginia.

November 1, 2000
I'm sure you've had your copy of Snowed In spinning in your stereo for over a month by now. People get in my car as "Merry Christmas, Baby" plays softly in the background and they are like, "There's something Christmas-y in the air, hmmm. Somehow I can't quite put my finger on what it is exactly." (c; Another random sensory preview: I was walking through my Midwestern campus on the banks of the Red Cedar River last night, and it smelled like New York City: cement, exhaust and fast food. There's nothing more Holiday-ish than Rockefeller Center--so something must definitely be on its way.

This means, if you're making a list, check out the newest addition to the Hanson CDNow Video collection.

My old guestbook finally reached 200 entries, so I've retired it. Besides the new one is more fun anyway. It would be an honor if you had time to be among the first to sign it!!

Whenever you have a great concert story to share, others seem to enjoy returning the favor.  I thought I'd share a couple of really neat concert stories I heard from friends after I gushed about recent experiences I've had.

  1. One friend is a huge fan of the Grateful Dead. He said his most meaningful experience was when he saw The Dead perform their first concert (in CA) after John Lennon was assassinated. Not a word was spoken, but the band came out and played an early Beatles song. They had never covered the Beatles before. They later played their own song, Don't Murder Me. Nobody acknowledged this tribute, but everyone knew and was deeply moved.
  2. Another friend, Chris, is the biggest Pearl Jam fan ever! He said September 18, 1998 will forever live in his mind as the most amazing day of his life-- until the day he gets married and the day his first child is born, of course. He and a friend brought only a single sign that read, "'Black'" (along with their names). Near the end of the show, during a guitar solo, Ed Vedder was observing the crowd when he spotted the sign and pointed to it. This was the only time Chris and his friend had raised the sign.  When the song ended, the next four words spoken by Vedder changed the guys' lives, "There is a request." The band played Black. Chris does not know of another concert when Ed has taken requests from the audience. Incredible!

Both of these bands have something in common. They encourage their fans to record concerts for future enjoyment. Chris has a copy of his amazing moment on CD. I myself heard Eddie's intro to Black. BTW, why not check it out, it's a great tune!!

October 22, 2000
In the recent Worlds chat, Taylor mentions the artist, Clay Ellis twice: first in answer to the question about great artists with whom he'd like to collaborate with in the future and then about whom he has been star-struck by. I thought you'd be interested in checking out some images of his work.

A huge happy birthday to Zac! He will be giving a concert on his birthday? Now that's better than frosted cupcakes or doughnuts!  Wow! Check out The History Channel to find out who was born on your birthday.

October 19, 2000
If you're still in doubt about Hanson's place among their contemporaries in the current pop culture scene, check out diplomacy.  This page blows any question listed on jeopardy, out of the race, as far as FAQs are concerned.

October 16, 2000
I added some photos from my tour experiences.  These are a couple random pictures of the first and last concert venues I attended, spanning from the pre-tour to the tour.

October 15, 2000
This is undeniably the most beautiful week in Michigan. The autumn colors are beyond description and the temperatures are ideal. I spent the weekend with my 3 year old cousin and she has officially turned Hanson fan, requesting their albums in the car and planning to ask Santa for their CDs for Christmas. Beyond sweet, no? Between fingerpainting, leaf collecting and doing somersaults in the yard, I managed to write up some thoughts on my most recent concert experiences: Detroit and Indianapolis. I hope it will be as much fun for you to read  as it was for me to remember them.

And, Shannon Curfman has found her rightful spot on the twenty-four seven list.

October 6, 2000
I am just recovering from a massive computer crash.  I apologize for the break in updates.  Please feel free to join the Updates list (again), if you dare. (c;  Only one day away from the Indianapolis concert . . . Oh my! (Quite possibly the "updates list" will receive exclusive concert information from this show. You never know. ::grin::)

Some thoughts triggered by MOE 9 are now available.

September 4, 2000
It's Labor Day in the United States and I hope you're finding time to relax. If you're like me, when you're given time to just sit and think, you begin to contemplate the deeper realities of being a Hanson fan. (c; Ever since I exchanged smiles with Tiger Woods at a golf tournament, I have wrestled with the tenuous state of fan status. Although you may consider that this moment will live forever in my mind (Anyone interested in a copy of the poem I wrote about my angst, "A Safari" is welcome to one.), it hardly registered in Tiger's memory at all. But what does this have to do with Hanson?

These same feelings resurfaced when I heard, "A Song to Sing" for the first time. I've often wondered if Hanson would address the overwhelming emotion of being the objects of worship. It would not be humanly possible for anyone to respond to the unimaginable volume of adoration that is heaped upon them. This powerful conflict is what hit me in full force that day in 1997 I saw Tiger on the PGA Tour. In multiple conversations with a good friend, I have concluded that Hanson captures some of this angst in their final song on their newest album. Laura's powerful essay on this topic translates the sentiment that very few would be able to verbalize in quite the same way: Blue Yonder Dreams--The Art of Being a Hanson Fan. Thank you, Laura!

In a moment of self-indulgence, I've published my hanson.net profile for anyone who does not subscribe.  I may regret this later: profile. (c;

The best tour stories accomplish two seemingly impossible tasks at the same time:

  1. They make you pause later, as you actually have to think hard to remember if you were actually at that concert or just read about it somewhere.   These accounts are just THAT vivid.
  2. At the same time, they take you to a concert that you have never experienced before.  You realize, "I would not have noticed that!" Or just the opposite, "I've felt exactly that, but never knew how to express it."

In an attempt to counter-balance the focus on recent unmentionable fan behavior at concerts, I would like to draw attention to one writer's experience at a performance in Atlanta . . . Her story should make every band in the country wish they were Hanson, because Isaac, Taylor and Zac somehow have a knack for drawing intelligent fans, devoted primarily to the music: the tabernacle (proof that lucky things happen to unlucky people)

The following is my "Wish That I Was There" List of songs I'm holding my breath for (October 7th, Indianapolis):

  • God Only Knows
  • Never Let Go
  • I Want You to Want Me (My favorite hanson.net clip of the moment)

Six Flags over Texas: an account of my first concert on the TTA 2000 Tour.

August 17, 2000
My mom just sent me a clipping from a Virginia newspaper after visiting this state recently: "Hanson Hits Hampton during Bay Days" (in a paper dated, Saturday, August 12, 2000).  There is a picture of Hanson with singer-songwriter Aaron Neville, at the Songwriter's Hall of Fame Induction ceremonies June 15 in New York. The article states that, "The famous trio of blond brothers . . . will headline the outdoor event happening in downtown Hampton Sept. 8-10." I just thought it was so cool that she cut it out for me while she was away on business.  For those in the Hampton Roads area, the following ticket information was also provided:

Admission to see the headlining entertainers at Bay Days won't be free in 2000. As was the case last year; buttons will be sold allowing access to the stage area on all three festival days.  Buttons cost $10 in advance.  They will be available starting August 25 at local Miller Mart locations.

The dates for the Midwest shows are finally posted and I'm faced with calling the MOE preferred ticket hotline: 918-446-1729.  Oddly, I did not receive this number from my copy of MOE #9, but from the website none of us can live without, the Hanson Hotel. Why? Because MOE #9 has not yet arrived in my mailbox.  hmmm . . .

I've heard the rumblings about MOE heading for more cyber-savvy pastures and frankly, I have mixed feelings. In all fairness, the unfair timing issue would disappear as everyone would have access to the hotline # in the same instant. The guys might also wonder why they're chasing people around the country seeking members' most current addresses.  Why not have the people come to them online?  Why waste paper?  Why spend money on postage?   It's all very attractive and seems to make common sense. I also considered the fact that this might be Hanson's answer to the Napster brouhaha. So instead of getting litigious, they discovered a way to get a piece of the pie. Astute.

At the same time--and I can't say this without sounding like someone who complains about "not being able to speak to a real person" when calling and hearing a machine pick up--I want to hear from Hanson. The printed MOE was my favorite form of communication with the band.  It was so personal and despite instructions to request songs on the radio or advertisements for merchandise, I didn't have to listen a spokesperson tell me that Hanson loves their fans. Even though we waited patiently for its arrival, in MOE, they wrote and drew for us. Laura, of Bright and Beautiful, has posted a well-reasoned editorial about this very subject that crystallizes all that I'm attempting to say here: Digital Meltdown. It's very insightful!

August 14, 2000
It's a strange mix of old and new and a sense that things are backwards. In the Sunday paper, there was a picture of Zac circa 1997 much like the cover of the calendar from the same year.  It was accompanied by the following quote in the Teen section under "Who said what?":

"When I turn 16, I can flip hamburgers for five bucks an hour, or I can perform for thousands of people and make a lot of money. What am I missing?" - Zach Hanson, 12, of Hanson, on his celebrity childhood

Just the sort of 3-year-old quip the band wants public after sending a disparaging remark to their fast food friends when Taylor mentioned his pet peeve on TRL:  fast food orders that are messed up. I guess it's their own "Stay in School" message. (c; (Remember the old saying that begins, "You don't want to end up . . .")

A generous friend sent me a copy of the Fillmore performance from Direct TV. Incredible!! Words cannot describe how fun it was to be back in concert mode again . . . Although, I feel like my life is in rewind, literally. I'm watching a copy of a video concert before actually going to one. Two years ago it was the opposite. Does that mean Hanson will end up back at the same concerts I attended, only this time I'll know where to look for the backstage pass people? Kind of like that movie, Groundhog Day? ::grin::

August 10, 2000
Just a couple of words about Hanson's recent tour acts. Michelle Branch's album, Broken Bracelet, has been spinning in my stereo recently. If you have the album, my favorite tracks are, "If Only She Knew" and "Sweet Misery" (I was slightly suspicious that some of her titles smacked a little too hard of Hanson and Moffatt influence, but this feeling completely evaporated by the sound of her voice. Really sweet. Plus, she writes her own music, plays her own instrument--the whole nine yards.)

And I received the following note about Neve, whose music I have never heard before, from Heather of Hanson Tour 2000:

Is it just me or does John's (lead singer of Neve) jacket in this photo shoot resemble a jacket that Ike wore during a photo shoot in TT&MON? And the whole roof (er, above the ground) thing that they've got going on in that picture.. wasn't that particular Hanson photo shoot (w/ the jacket) on a roof too?

August 1, 2000
The tour is here!!  Can it really be happening? It's without a name, without an opening band at first, and without fear that Hanson will cancel a venue because "the stage is too small." The first date in Tulsa . . . with ticket sale stipulations that were aimed at putting the same Mayfest attenders in the front rows or spread across most of the rows at the Performing Arts Center? Does it get very much sweeter than that? Also, beginning the tour on the West Coast this time is just so fair . . . although we never tire of hearing the concert stories, the East Coast got the chance to be town cryers last tour. Those of us in Michigan, Illinois and Wisconsin--can we safely assume the next tour will kick off somewhere where bratwurst and cheddar are served backstage? (Eh, Milwaukee? ::smirk::)

July 26, 2000
MMMBop was included in a wedding gift.  I just returned from Denver, CO after being in the wedding of one of my best friends.  It was magical!   I thought you might be most interested in one of the amusing gifts she and her husband received. It was a three CD set of songs downloaded from Napster. Not that I endorse this site, but one of the CDs was "wedding reception dance music" and MMMBop was included. My friend had put this song on her list for the DJ as a sweet gesture of friendship for me. (I'm choking up again. ::grin::) Anyway, it was a surprise.  I know everybody will think, "Why not More Than Anything" but again, my friend didn't tell me she was including Hanson AND in the "just to be clear category" I did not give her this gift of pirated music. (c;

Anyway, the perfect anecdote when encountering people who only remember Hanson patronizingly for MMMBop . .. (For example, when I speak of Hanson appreciation, the inevitable reaction among my peers in the 20-something set is . .. "Oh didn't they sing that du-wop song? How did it go again?") is the fact that the band is never hesitant to sing their #1 single. They continue to perform it publicly in the most heart-felt ways (Case in point: a cappella during Say What Karaoke Finals). It's endearing to see how the guys know when not to take themselves too seriously, but they also know the value of this amazing song. Thanks Hanson! (Reason #1022 to not give it up.)

July 19, 2000
There are just some things that simply couldn't be said any better.  I really think you're going to appreciate the newest postcard I received about Hanson and their regard for women: R-E-S-P-E-C-T

July 16, 2000
Could this weekend contain any more Hanson?  Check out Look at You for the complete thoughts on all the goings-on.

Do you like spoofs?  I like spoofs!  I posted a new section inspired by a May 2000 radio interview (Thanks Ann!). The guys mentioned that they have considered the possibility of an parody album ::smirk:: a.k.a.

And I have posted a page @ hanson.net: Lyrical Connections

July 8, 2000
I felt inspired to post part of the liner notes to the re-release of Pet Sounds by the Beach Boys. In 24/7, I acknowledge the connection between God Only Knows. and Hanson.

July 7, 2000
Do you ever wonder if your letters are a better journal of your life than, well, your actual journal? If so, you'll understand why I've decided to begin collecting some great insights and other fun things people have sent.  I've created a new section for these epiphanies called, postcards.  You never know when something will tickle your fancy (Isn't this just about the funniest phrase you've ever heard?). Hope you enjoy these friendly words as much as I have!

BTW, I'm going to be in my best friend's wedding in a couple weeks.   Betsy is getting married in Denver so that's why I was hoping the band would launch their tour at Red Rocks on just the weekend I would be in the Mile High City. Now if that had truly happened, it would have been like being Sophia Gonzalez or something!! Anyway, I bring this up, because my friend's fiancé heard TTA for the first time while in my car last weekend and asked, "Who are these guys? They're pretty good." (Never underestimate the power of The Force! (c;)

July 2, 2000
"I saw your boys on tv last night."
-- spoken to me by a computer lab assistant I had only met recently

I just returned home from a 2 week course at Michigan Technological University. My experiences were filled with quirky Hanson-related stories. For example, when I heard the words above, I immediately thought, "That lab guy must have me confused with someone else, because I don't know anyone on television." Then, he grinned and continued, "Actually, their new video isn't so bad. It was kind of cool." This, gentle reader, is evidence that my Hanson devotion is one of the first things people find out about me. This poor young man was then treated to a complete list of all of the merits of the "If Only" video.

Yet another episode involved one of my classmates who had just flown in from Egypt.  He had never heard of Hanson before so he was eager to listen to TTA on my Discman. One listen was all it took for him to realize he would be stopping at a music store to purchase some Hanson albums before returning to the Mediterranean.

In yet another incident, a classmate began to tease me with the usual comments about Hanson's hair and how unattractive certain members of the band were in his opinion.  Well, I'm usually a gentle person.  Plus, not that the band's talent has anything to do with the guys' physical appearance or anything!  However, I was obliged to reach for the July 2000 issue of Interview magazine. After viewing the artful and absolutely stunning pictures of the guys taken by Gus Van Sant, this person came to the conclusion that he had been hasty in his initial judgment of the band. (NOT that my devotion has anything to do with the guys' fabulous looks!! Just in case you wondered where I stood on this issue!! ::smirk::)

I really think I would border on sacrilegious to invoke religious images of the Crusaders or the disciples, but really these Hanson conversions have to start somewhere.  I just do what I can. (c;

A final note about Hanson and my time away: In order to gain insight into the small community where MTU resides up in the scenic Upper Peninsula of Michigan, on the weekend the natives showed the movie, Mystery, Alaska for those of us from "down state."  This is a heart-warming movie about small towns and a love of hockey . . . blah blah blah . . . Did you know that a Hanson poster, circa 1997 (Isaac in a green shirt, Taylor in a red shirt and Zac is in a blue shirt) is featured in one of the scenes?  If not, check out the movie for this obscure, but significant connection to the band. ::wink:: Hey, when you're homesick, anything familiar is comforting!

Plane reading: I was charmed to hear in the MSN chat that it's John Popper's voice we hear at the end of "If Only" remarking on all the "good stuff in there."  It heightened my appreciation for the harmonica section of that, if this is possible. And, not that I usually read Dostoevsky or anything on my plane trips, but it was amusing for me to realize that the person seated next to me was eyeing my copies of the recent issues of Jump and Teen magazines. "So, I read them for the articles (and their enhanced CDs that contain material already released on the Australian "If Only" single)? Is there a problem with that?" ::steely glance::  hehe

While I was away: I received MOE 8 and the www.twec.com autographed poster of Hanson. This means that I will try my best to refrain from asking for an autograph if I ever am given the opportunity to meet the band since I really already have their autographs now. ::cough cough:: I came to this resolution after reading the recent CDNow interview. (c;  Finally, in other news, I received my copy of the album, Mock Heroic by Admiral Twin. Are they available for the "The Glassy Surface" tour?!! (That's what I'm calling it for now.) This record is the thinking person's musical guide to quirky allusions and metaphors. Enjoy!! Way to go AT!

Wish that You Were There?  Once again, the CDNow All Star Daily News has come through . . . They were blessed to have attended the Songwriters Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony.   ::sigh:: Hanson, Paul McCartney, Brian Wilson, James Taylor, Carole King and many more . . . in the presence of songs like "God Only Knows" and "Stand By Me"? Isn't this what I envisioned a certain room of heaven to be like?  ::grin::

A few years ago, a very generous person taught me how to use the Sound Recorder on my new Gateway, but we have not stayed in contact over time. However, I was pleasantly surprised to see her letter in an issue of MOE where she tried her hand at creating a soulmate for the ever-tormented MOEMan. Now read her highly informative and very entertaining account of her evening at, none other than, the event mentioned above: The Songwriters Hall of Fame, A Hanson Review.

When I got home today, my friend had left a message on my machine that later caused me to spend 1 1/2 hours in front of the tv tonight watching a rebroadcast of an earlier show--You guessed it, she called to tell me about the new #1 video on TRL and that the band had talked to Carson! (A shout-out to Kim, you rock! I'm speaking TRL-ese for this very special occasion. (c;)  How much do we all love John Norris?!!   As if we need more reason to send him our regards!  This veejay took time before the news to express his feeling that Hanson is a very deserving band! Congratulations Hanson for making the top spot!  (I hope you're back in Denver sometime in July for the tour!--The guys said they were in CO, but were heading back to NY for the Songwriters Hall of Fame festivities.)

"Bubble-Gum Pop Grows Up" is the title that Newsweek gave the letters to the editor regarding the recent article on Hanson (May 22, 2000).  This week's issue (June 12, 2000) includes four letters in response to the article on the band.   Two readers take issue with the publication's treatment of their beloved Backstreet. However, the following are the other two letters, each with a decidedly different tone, that deal directly with the "three dudes from Oklahoma" (Isaac's suggestion for the band's introduction at Qtopia):

I was quite pleased to stumble upon your article on Hanson.  The amazingly talented musicians who make up the band truly deserve the recognition.  In a time of computer-enhanced vocals, choreographed dance moves and disingenuous attempts at songwriting (My comment: someone was watching "Making the Video" (c;), Hanson stands out as a band of phenomenal talent and exceptional musical ability.  Hanson is clearly a step above the rest, and your article vividly illustrated their genuine talent and love for music.  I'm glad Newsweek has recognized the band's rare, and tremendous, musical abilities.

Emily Rathgeber
Clifton, NJ

Your article on Hanson states that the three brothers are "fighting for their right to adulthood." I wish them luck, particularly in light of the fact that the acronym of their first names (Zac, Isaac and Taylor) is "ZIT."

Charles Crockford
Ontario, Canada

Apparently Charles has time to come up with "clever" acronyms of bands' names--Too bad he can't claim the rights to the notorious *NSync fame whose name so obviously is an acronym of those performers' last letters of their first names.  How do I know these things?! (c;

The DJs at my local radio station have been telling me that they haven't received "If Only" yet. However, tonight I spoke to a very nice DJ who said that the guys in the studio sometimes do not know when singles come in to the boss's office because not a lot of people have been requesting them. The DJs automatically assume they haven't received them if the boss hasn't brought it out into the studio. Well, since the nice DJ I spoke to this evening knows about the song, due to my request, he will officially play "If Only" for the first time in my local listening area! Yay!!

He also added that Hanson is his favorite "boy band." I replied, "It's not really a fair comparison since I don't exactly see many other groups playing instruments." ::grin:: His response, "That's why they're my favorite." He will be recording my request for the official stats tonight.

June 5, 2000
My good buddy Ann shared this observation with me that I just know you're going to like. Thanks Ann!! "There's a lot of good stuff in it" indeed:

Did you notice that there are at least four references to Other People's Hit Song Titles amongst the lyrics of the TTA album? Intentional or unintentional, I wonder.

Wish That I Was There: "More Than a Feeling" <Boston - 1976>
Love Song: "Book of Love" <The Monotones - 1958>
Sure About It: "Heart of Gold" <Neil Young - 1972>
A Song To Sing: "Let It Be" <The Beatles - 1970>

Here is one of my lame TRL message requests for "If Only" that may or may not have been posted because frankly, I don't watch this show every night (Just thought I'd share ::grin::):

"Spiders, an RV and a long dusty road!!  If this video were any cooler, it could not have been shot in a desert."

For anyone who ordered an advanced copy of the new album from www.twec.com  and wondered, "Hey, where's my autographed poster of the band? I guess it was too good to be true." This site promised an autographed poster of Hanson with each order. Well, I contacted customer service and they explained that they received orders in this promotion up until May 9th, and so the posters are not going to be sent out until the band gets the chance to autograph them.  They should be arriving in about 4-5 weeks. Whew!

June 2, 2000
Have you heard the rumors?  What? Hanson's tour in jeopardy?  Well, it seems the storm front has not quite materialized.  However, if you need any more encouragement to support the band to ensure their tour endeavors, I've just returned from Detroit where I attended Hanson's radio concert at the Fox Theatre.   One word: Electrifying!

BTW, don't forget to check out A Heart to Follow: the plan formulated by the indomitable Lisa to support Hanson like you've never supported them before.  Thanks Lisa!

June 1, 2000
Happy birthday, Mr. Hanson! (and Mark, my brother-in-law)

May 19, 2000
I hesitate to post my "puritan" thoughts on Hanson-related appearances, but I can not resist in regard to "House of Style."  When I saw the promotion for this show I was aghast . . . "Beautiful people wearing next to nothing!!"  Oh my gosh, as Hanson obviously fall into the category of "beautiful people" what could this mean? Well, I was more than relieved to see that the segment featured the surfing footage that complemented the article in MOE #6. In fact, the tape segment gives us the surf guru himself, Izzy Paskowitz saying of Hanson: "For beginners, you've got to consider, these guys are ripping!"  Whoa!! And really, if you've seen the MMMBop video, the beach scene with the band in wet suits pretty much sums up the "scandalous factor" of this feature, oddly wedged in between the pages of the swimsuit edition of HOS.

Please do not hesitate to check out my good buddy, Ann's, review of the new album.  It's rich in music history and full of great insights.  In short, it's something you don't want to miss: Guest Review.  Other reviews I recommend: Rachael's thoughts on the album, underrated and Laura's early returns, at first sight.

I'm battling back from a computer "worm" that was accidentally sent to me by someone I know.  This means that I have lost my modest "updates" list.  So, if you'd like to join or re-join the sporadic mailing list that notifies you when this site is updated, send mail to: dknstormy@aol.com with "Updates" as the subject.  Thanks so much!!  Sorry about the hassle.

Finally, did I mention that I will be at the Fox Theatre in Detroit on June 1 for Qtopia?  Macy Gray AND Hanson? Does it get any sweeter than that? If you'll be there, I'd love to hear from you!

May 16, 2000
I was disappointed when I didn't see a small album review or mention in my last issue of Newsweek.  Well, well, well . . . patience is a virtue since Hanson has a three-page article devoted to them in the May 22, 2000 issue that arrived in my mailbox today.  It's almost as though Hanson is starting to invade my space, rather than feeling as if I have to go out of my way to keep pace with them. Unfortunately, the article title is disappointing, "The Tiger Beat Goes on"--as is the graphic of someone blowing bubblegum in the corner.  On the up-side, Hanson aren't one of the groups pictured in the gooey bubble (Can you guess the 5 groups/performers listed?). (c;  The same person who interviewed Hanson for Virgin Megastore online wrote the Newsweek article, Lorraine Ali.   Representative flavor of the hard copy: "But Hanson are a food group apart from the sugary, in-between snacks called boy bands." ::yawn::

For almost 2 years I've subscribed to the CDNow newsletter and it has finally paid off.  They posted a link to some backstage comments at Wango Tango.   The most memorable Hanson ones include:

Hanson's Isaac Hanson had this little gem to [contribute]: "Every time you write a song, it's a new song. It's different than the song that you wrote before."

Elsewhere during the conference, Taylor Hanson announced what he missed most while away from home was In-N-Out Burger and what he looks for in a woman is "Female and one active braincell."

and from the review of the event itself:

"You guys are the laziest bunch of people I have ever seen," yelped drummer Zac Hanson at one point. "Get off your butts!"

hmmm . . .  What would I do if my every word was recorded and transmitted on the 'Net? Something to think about . . . The Internet would certainly be less entertaining, that's for sure!! ::grin::  Also, if you go to Tower Records, their free in-store magazine, Pulse, includes a fairly RollingStone-ish review of the new album. "Sophomore Trump: Hanson's Solid Second Effort Has Heart to Go with its Hooks" by Scott Shinder. Translated: "Better than boy bands.  These guys are legitimate."   (c;

May 11, 2000
A rough cut of my This Time Around review and The Glassy Surface, recent article thoughts, are now available for those hearty enough to spend time in the company of my quirkiness. In fact, don't even turn off the album while reading.  Your stereo is, of course, on repeat anyway. Ü

Carson . . . Carson . . . I knew that Zac jumping into your lap back in '98 was the pivotal moment--the exact second when you found the Love!  ::grin::  More on the appearances sometime soon.

May 9, 2000
Much like 77th Street, 1440 and the almighty number three, 05.09.00 has finally established itself in Hanson lore!  The Second Coming of Hanson is here.  Look for album thoughts and comments on recent articles and interviews coming soon! The things you see, the way you see them will never be seen again . . .

May 3, 2000
A good friend has submitted her take on the "Weird" video.  So insightful and just plain cool . . . It's like suiting up in scuba gear and diving into the video along with the band.  I'm almost feeling numb as Hanson begins to crop up in an overwhelming number of places again, that it feels sort of comforting to retread the familiar waterlogged subway platform with the guys once again.   Thanks Erin!

April 22, 2000
After considerable reflecting on the confession I posted yesterday, I've come to some new conclusions.  One of the reason we love Hanson so much is their generosity. Through a shared appreciation of their music, I have have been able to meet some incredible new friends.  The band's generous spirit has inspired us to listen more to other people's spirits calling.  For that, I am eternally grateful!  Their music has changed lives.  Who am I to judge what kind of a fan can relate to that powerful force? (c;

Happy Easter and Passover!

April 21, 2000
As we approach the album release date, May 9th or 05.09.00, when Hanson and the rest of us pull out all the stops and begin rejoicing . .. officially, let's take a moment to reflect.  Let's consider the forces that have brought each and every one of us to this exact time in history.  As I wrote Rachael of Rachael's Hanson Oasis in response to her eloquent editorial on this very subject, I have had mixed emotions about Hanson's popularity the past few years. As someone who has always had a tender spot for the "Goose"s of the world (the best friend in "Top Gun"), there has been a part of me that discreetly longed for the days when Hanson was supported by the people who knew and cared about them the best (Considering this, would I even be able to say I was part of this camp? How much do you truly know people you've never met?).  At the same time, I've supported them by requesting them on radio, on MTV and by buying their singles not just because I love the music, but so their ratings would remain high. As I face these ambiguous feelings once again, I wish the guys all the best.  Of course, ironically, it is only through the support of more people that the band can continue making the music that touches my heart and soul.  Although MMMBop was correct in that we never know, in what instant, something will be taken from us . . . at the same time, each of us secretly longs, in the end, to be among the only ones there. Peace and joy to all of you . . . and for those just joining us, here's The Why behind planting a seed, a flower or a rose.  Cheers to Laura of Bright and Beautiful, as well!

April 19, 2000
I have been a huge fan of Cynthia and Daniel's clay figures for years--you know the ones, on that amazing page we all know and love as "Hanson in Clay-o-Vision," a.k.a. MOE NetPick.  Cynthia kindly sent me the following link to a site that blew me away: Moe #42.  All I can say is, "I'm Not Worthy!"  Thanks guys!

April 18, 2000
There are possibly not enough hours in the day.  Within the past week, I have received 2 notices about updates to the 24/7 page.   They involve The Allman Brothers, Celine Dion and Eric Clapton.  Lots of thanks to Marjan and Traci!!  You guys are pretty keen! (c;

April 7, 2000
My copy of "This Time Around" arrived in the mail today.  (CDNow must wait to send out singles on the release date, so pre-ordering online means you get it later.) Anyway, some thoughts on the album jacket and liner notes:  Why is Isaac's head cut in half?  Now these are the pictures and the feeling that I would have imagined the director of Kid Rock's video, "Cowboy" would have visualized for the TTA video. I'm speaking, of course, about David Meyers, who did indeed direct the TTA video--only that video doesn't have quite the "timeless" quality of these windblown, sepia-toned pictures.  Shall we say, it has more of a different vibe.::grin:: Finally, I still think of "Mandolin Rain" when I see that shadowy, outdoor jam session photo that appears beneath the actual single.

Okay, if you don't have the single yet, there's a song from the album that, in my humble opinion, you will not want to wait another month to hear.   The mystery of the RTA "crescent moon" song is revealed.  The "new song" included on the single is indeed the finished product of the one we saw being conceived during the RTA video.  So why not maximize the number of days that you are able to enjoy this incredible track?  Yes, I'm speaking of "Love Song."  And you thought "Stories" was as good as it got in tributes to enduring love--probably inspired by their parents. Well, think again, because this song is "Stories: Part II--and still to be continued."  Isaac almost whispers the deepest secrets of "forever and a day" in the lyrics and melody of this song.   At first, I didn't think that I could enjoy something so generically titled, "Love Song."  However, the sweet surprise is that it isn't about love that always goes right . . . necessarily.  Okay . . . I just ruined the theme.  Just listen and send your letters of appreciation to Hanson, c/o Mr. and Mrs. Hanson.  I just wish someone had told me before . . . ::sigh::

About the enhanced video . . . there are two options.  The first includes clips about "This Time Around" (the song, not the entire album) from the studio interviews.  The complete version of the interviews, including snippets of songs from the rest of the album, can be found on the Australian single, "If Only" Part I.  But, it's the second option, a preview of the "If Only" video that captured my heart!  Camping, the desert in spring, the rock climbing . . . the spider--what's not to love?  Please forgive me "This Time Around" video . . . I have to say that I love your sibling better! ::sob::

April 4, 2000
What kind of a Spartan would I be if I didn't congratulate the Michigan State University men's basketball team on their NCAA Championship victory?!!   Congratulations to Tom Izzo, "the Flintstones" and the rest of the amazing team!!  AND, would you believe my undergrad alma mater won the Division III NCAA basketball championship as well?!!  Cheers to the Calvin College Knights as well!!

It's also "Time" for the first U.S. single!!  (c;

April 3, 2000
It's been 3 years, almost officially now and really, is it possible to remain this devoted to the band? REALLY?!  I mean, 3 years was middle school--in fact, it truly was Zac's middle school experience!  In 3 years a baby learns to talk, walk, draw, grow teeth and generally do tons of incredible things!  Just as I'm shaking my head in amazement, an article comes along that has me asking, "How could I not wish to know Hanson for an entire lifetime?!!"  Check out the Nylon interview at the Hanson Hotel. You'll see what I mean . . .

April 2, 2000
I was feeling kind of bummed and sad, and then a little apprehensive that I was bummed and sad, because I was not going to be there for TRL last Friday or the listening party at night.  The reason for my absence was that I was attending a writing conference. (Check out Jessi's perspective on the online event: Listening Party?)   I shouldn't be devoting so much time to Hanson when I would be surrounded by the likes of Chaim Potok, Anne Lamott and Maya Angelou, should I?!!  I'm sure even Hanson would have advised me to take in as much as possible.  Anyway, here are some beautiful words on music--I've begun to collect quotes about the mystery it inspires:

. . .  music is about as physical as it gets: your essential rhythm is your heartbeat; your essential sound, the breath.   We're walking temples of noise, and when you add tender hearts to this mix, it somehow lets us meet in places we couldn't get to any other way.

-- Anne Lamott, Traveling Mercies

At the risk of sounding like "And for only $19.95," let me tell you about how worth it the Australian single, "If Only" really is!!  I mean, this country knows how to do singles!  It not only has 2 versions of this bright yellow song, but it's also enhanced with studio interviews!  Yes, you heard correctly. "And that's not all!"  For your listening pleasure, you also receive the concert versions of "Sometimes" and "Soldier."  Can you hear my heart melting? How long have I been saying that "Sometimes" is among my favorite concert arrangements?!!   And the acoustic campfire-iness of "Soldier" will make you weep.  I promise you.  I have the "red version" or what appears to be Part I.  The green CD or Part II, sold separately includes: "If Only" (radio edit), "If Only (album version), "I Don't Know," "If Only" (UK Radio Mix) and "If Only" video, enhanced.  Check out http://www.hmv.com.au/ for more information.

By the way, my pre-registering "dknstormy" on hanson.net didn't take.  So if you're "in the net way" you can contact me at scout@hanson.net.  If you recognize the literary reference there . . . Very cool!!  However, my main address will remain dknstormy@aol.com.

March 26, 2000
The recent issue of MOE has finally arrived and, as usual, I have some reflections on it.  I babysat my cousin and niece this weekend.  I subjected them to a listen to clips from the new album.  My three-year-old cousin clearly was taken by In the City.  In true Hanson fashion, she was on her feet!  My niece did not have an obvious favorite, but she enjoyed kicking it with the rest of us. ::smile::

March 21, 2000
Spotted any contest winners lately?  My buddy, Julie, never misses a thing!!   Check out this site before this webmaster heads off to meet the band: basicallyHanson.

March 20, 2000
For everyone who has ever visited this page . . . for the people who have written notes of observation and encouragement . . . for all my friends who have generously given me their honest thoughts, I've constructed a new format that I hope you will enjoy:  a new life.  I welcome your reaction to this site!

The new site will remain as is . . . I will not update it further. The classic version, that you have always visited, wiill continue to be the main site. For example, be sure to check out Brianna's cool observation about the enduring popularity of "School House Rock."  Who knew it was this huge? (c;

The thought for the day is brought to you by my good friend, Stephanie (Thanks for everything!!):

The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the source of all true art and science. He to whom this emotion is a stranger, who can no longer pause to wonder and stand rapt in awe, is as good as dead: his eyes are closed.
-- Albert Einstein

March 14, 2000
Happy Birthday, Taylor . . . Dawson Leery . . . the late Mr. Einstein!  Did I miss anybody?  March is usually one of my least favorite times of the year--the long pause between winter and spring.  But to celebrate a birthday at this time?   Yet another reason to be in awe of the keyboardist of Hanson . . . to have a birthday in March is just so wonderfully clever.

March 12, 2000
Stunning!!  This is really the only articulate sound I could make after attending a Jonny Lang concert last night. If you're interested in a slightly lengthier version of my reaction check out: Falling Endlessly.

March 10, 2000
I was considering the lyrics to "If Only" after the @MTV appearance and I realized something that I haven't been able to articulate until just now.  Hanson's word choice in their songs prove over and over that they do not shop at "Lyrics R Us."  Many, many times I've asked myself, "Did they just say what I think I heard?" How candid and refreshing are people who have the guts to say just what's on their mind? Consider the following:

  • . . . until you lose your hair . . . --MMMBop
  • And though my flesh is gone . . . --With You in Your Dreams
  • Letting this big-toed bald man sitting here tell me about the sky. --Man from Milwaukee
  • I'd rather bleed just to know why I died. --This Time Around
  • If only I had the guts to feel this way.  --If Only

There's another thread that ties these snippets together. Can you identify it?

Among my all-time favorite lines has got to be the classic, yet truly insane line: "They run around in their underwear, and they never shave." The tourist attractions in Albertane are not for the faint-hearted!   hehe

March 7, 2000
Whew!  Is Hanson Day in March or May . . . Yesterday, I kept thinking, "Tomorrow is the release of the album.  Wait, no--that can't be right, can it?"

Just a couple of thoughts about the recent appearances from yesterday's premiere: Yearbook.

Sometimes the best laid plans can go awry.  During the first five minutes of "Hanson@MTV" my television began to misbehave.  hmmm . .. Can you picture my face?  I had lost about 5 minutes of the show.  It soon cleared up and I was able to catch the end of the band's live performance of "This Time Around."  But not after I panicked and called my sister in another city to begin taping immediately and I began frantically to dial my cable provider.  (c;

How much do I love bright and beautiful? Let me just say it's a thrill and quite an honor to be invited into her webring.  Check it out: # Little Pretty ? >>

Next week is my spring break and could the timing be any better?  I'll be spending most of my time next to a VCR in "record" mode.  ::grin::   The sad thing is that I'm not even bitter about not going to a tropical location (What? No access to TRL in Bermuda?!! Forget it, I'll just stay home!)

February 19, 2000
"Yes, it's true.  It can be hidden no more.  There is a new love in Zac's life that he has been hiding.  But now the truth just has to come out.   Betsy is . . . is . . ." If you haven't heard the rest of this post at hanson.net by Hanson's trusty videographer and good friend, Ashley, check out secrets and lies.

I've attempted to spruce up the site a little bit with those wonderful pictures and sound clips Hanson has generously offered amateur webmasters.  I was able to add the Quick Time samples of the new album at excited yet?  Hope everything works for you.

February 16, 2000
Guess who is AOL's "story of the instant?"  Yes, it's the band from Oklahoma.  Here's what the mighty online service has to say:

An Older Hanson Returns
Teenage rock trio Hanson has grown up in front of the world's eyes.  Their soon-to-be-released new CD flirts with a more rocking, mature sound.

February 15, 2000
I've been calling the tiny "Our High Five at Nine #1 request is 'If You Steal My Sunshine'" radio station here in town to request This Time Around.   The DJs have sounded a little too smug for people who are missing out on spinning Hanson's amazing new single.  However, when they said they hadn't even heard it yet, I suggested they visit hansonline.  I think one of them actually took out a pencil to copy down the address, but then said, "Unfortunately, sweetie, Real Audio doesn't sound good on the radio."  Huh?

But now, the next level . . . Liquid Audio?  How pretty and lyrical that Liquid Player is!!  Did I mention that I LOVE Liquid music?!  In a conversation with Laura of bright and beautiful, I began to feel like the meaning behind This Time Around was beginning to gel: Are you settling for something just because it's easy . .. or are you making the hard choices--making a difference? ::pause for reflection and awe::  Our buddy and webmaster, Shelley, concurred with this conversation.   She wrote to say, "Put on these chains and you can live a free life, well I'd rather bleed just to know why I die(s).  The conviction of those words go beyond a song - you know that they are expressing what is truly in their hearts. I can relate." Amazing!

February 14, 2000
How great were some of those questions at the chat?!!  It felt like more than 50% of them were from die-hard fans of the music.  The most amusing evidence of that was when someone asked about "Nick at Nite" regarding  Na-nu Na-nu from the enhanced CD. Ü The best part about chats for me is to try to predict the guys answers by actually typing in a response to the questions (I know, simple minds, simple pleasures . . . .haha). Oddly, my answers matched theirs about 4 times . . . including the "all the Crows" answer to the question about which artists are the guys currently listening to now.  It was so cool to hear that the guys went to Joshua Tree.  I had an almost spiritual experience when I visited.  The U2 factor was part of the initial draw, but it was also the time when the desert flowers were in bloom.   It was amazing!  (Don't ask me about Betsy . . . that's the name of one of my best friends and her boyfriend's name is Jim. ::grin::)

February 12, 2000
Scenes of the guys bursting out of the cave from the MMMBop video are exactly what clever producers will choose as the obligatory opening clip to introduce a story on Hanson's return.  It pays tribute to Hanson's smash hit and symbolically transitions to their evolution.  I finally caught MTV News 1515 and posted my thoughts at the yearbook.

Also an early audio Valentine's wish for you. It's full of cheesy, but heartfelt wishes for you--and if it sounds at all familiar, like a certain Hanson institution that you know and love--well, that's purely coincidental. ::grin::  If you aren't able to download this wav, drop me a line and I'll send you the transcript (Warning: even the transcript can't erase the cheesy factor, which refuses to be ignored!! haha).  Happy Hearts Day!!

For the past two days, I've been buried under piles of quilts, including an electric blanket turned up to "hi."  Yes, I was a victim of the flu that has been rampaging across the country.  It hit right after I posted my observation about the New York fans—I remember reading recently that the New York metropolitan area has been hit hard by this "epidemic."  I literally felt as though someone had been sent to beat me up.  A wicked virus originating on the East Coast attacks me hours after posting equally potent observations on this area of the country? Connection?  hmmm . . . (c;

Anyway, I've still been able to keep up with Hanson's quirky appearances  despite my condition.   The Jay Leno and Access Hollywood comments will be joined by MTV News 1515 when that show airs in my area.  My reflections will be found in the yearbook.  For now, I've compiled a list of my initial thoughts on the hansonline clips in a new section entitled, Excited Yet?  P.S. According to the SonicNet tracklist, Smile seems to have disappeared from view.  After previewing it on the MOE enHANSON-ed CD and on a studio video clip at hansonline, maybe it will resurface someday for fan club members only or as a bonus track on a single?

I realized that I haven't commented on In the City yet. Before I launch into my theory behind the lyrics, let me say this song intrigues me, but the music didn't speak to me as immediately as say, Dying to Be Alive.  But, there's a raw energy about it that is undeniable.  But now, my theory:

I've long held a theory about Hanson and The City. Since I lived and worked in and around New York before becoming a Midwesterner, I always refer to NYC as "The City." So, first of all, my opinion is that this song is undoubtedly about, well, the Big Apple—which may be obvious to some and not to others. Secondly, not to relive painful memories or revive old rivalries involving fan clubs with food names, Hanson—Taylor—has mentioned an affection for this city. Finally, every time I hear the LFA version of Man From Milwaukee, I wonder, "Have the guys been watching too many reruns of Saturday Night Live's 'Coffee Talk'?" Their New Yoo-ork accent is positively amusing!! In their current song about "the city" (where-ever that might be ::wink wink::), they speak of their fascination with those sassy, love-to-hate-them, demo-distributing, X-rated story-writing, ever-intriguing, subway riding, TRL attending, Beacon Theater scene stealers. I hope that didn't sound bitter, because it wasn't intended to be.  If you're from the East Coast, you get that there's actually a compliment in there somewhere. (c; How can you not love the New York fans?

"Whoa" . . . and "just wow" are really all that come to mind right now.  It always takes awhile for my Real Music Player to open itself and then for audio clips to find their way over . . . This means, as I'm innocently responding to mail or typing away on some project, suddenly . . . there's Taylor's amazing voice with, "Loving you . . . " and everything freezes for a second.  (A real "Matrix" mid-air moment for me!)  I'm about speechless when it comes to Save Me.

For all those boy band side-takers, I think that Hanson has knocked that question out of the park, baby!!   My opinion is that If Only hinted at the sound of another brother band, but the complexity of Hanson's music is only that much more obvious in contrast. No offense intended, simply an observation.

What is most endearing about Hanson to me is their quirkiness!  I love that they have dared to write more than one song that wasn't informed by romantic love alone: Weird, With You in Your Dreams, Man from Milwaukee . . . Yearbook and others.  This is the kind of inspiration, I always treasure about the music.  I'm looking forward to how things continue to develop, dare I say it, this time around. ::grin::

It's been kind of a tough weekend.  There's been losses in my family and a friend's family recently.  I heard you crying, somebody stole my soul. How could I be dying, some 25 days ago . . . Once again, there's Hanson—reaching out a hand to understand. How much do I love the new song clips? Long-time visitors to this page know how close gospel is to my heart—Even though you're rock-n-roll, guys, you've proven that you never forget your soul!

Someone wrote recently to ask if this site had an update list. My updates are very sparse and unpredictable. However, if you're interested in receiving mail when mostly very brief updates are posted, feel free to send mail with "Updates" in the subject: dknstormy@aol.com  (Any mail is always a pleasant surprise . . . (c;)

P.S. I mentioned a Hanson reference in a Time magazine "Drawing Board" comic strip last spring.  I finally scanned that in.  Enjoy!

Those hansonline clips are just about incredible, in my opinion.  Could Dying to be Alive be any more intriguing and, well, addictive?  It's classic Hanson with its clever title.

I caught a weird connection during a VH1 Pop-Up Video Quiz. In a wacky concept, during the Cyndi Lauper video, True Colors, pop-ups appeared containing the names of artists after they had been spell-checked.  You had to guess the artist from their "corrected spellings." I didn't catch the words they provided for this person, because I had looked away to talk to my baby niece.  But my guess is that the bubble said: Zap Handsome.  You guessed it, the answer was Zac Hanson. It said, he recorded a hit song, MMMBop while Cyndi recorded a hit song, She-Bop. Pretty insane, huh?

Oh My Gosh! "This Time Around" is just . . . . well, wonderful! It seems to have a sort of "Jonny"-esque feel to it--I guess THAT's no coincidence. =o)  Anyway, Mr. Sabec, No Worries—my local radio station will be hearing from me regularly now.  ::grin::

My buddy, Julie, sent some mail to let me know that we must have read MTV/Hanson's mind when we drafted the petition letter below. Apparently, Ashley posted the following message to AFH:

YES!!! This Time Around WILL be featured on MTV's Making the Video. Details coming soon!!

What was the first place I flipped to in my January 31, 2000 issue of Newsweek? The article, "Rap's Unlikely King." The writer, Johnnie L. Roberts, asks, "Is [Lyor Cohen, co-president of Island Def Jam]—Developing a taste for bubble gum?"  The mere mention of this particular type of candy, should signal all Hanson fans to brace themselves for imminent references to the band.  Fans are certainly not disappointed. (The 1998 ruffle shirt picture of the brothers is also superimposed on a CD and accompanies the piece--Thanks again Hanson Hotel!):

It remains to be seen how Cohen's rap moves will play in the bubble gum world of Hanson, a group he now works with . . .. "If I knock the rock thing out of the park," Cohen says, "it's gonna be crazy around here." That kind of craziness would make the Seagram bosses glad they invited a rapper to their party.

Hmmm . . .This might be a good time to remember that sometimes you've just got to appreciate the craziness.

Recently, I've been getting all nostalgic for "Hanson, Back in the Day."  I was remembering the sun spots and moon craters that provided background to hansonline at one time, the Beacon poster of Hanson that accompanied the first issue of MOE, and all those crazy days of the Summer of '97 when MMMBop and B**** competed for top spots on various countdowns. ::sigh::

Anyway, as we anticipate the upcoming release of the guys' album, a few of friends and I drafted a letter to MTV.  We have not yet sent it, and would welcome any suggestions or comments you may have.  Thanks!

Dear MTV,

We're not sure if you've followed the sheer force of Hanson's loyal fan base, but the numbers are undeniable: the band's Yahoo! chats consistently rank among the highest attended, the official website has been tracked in the top ten sites with the most hits, and thousands of fans waged a successful campaign to have the brothers' rendition of the national anthem aired during the Women's World Cup.

With this in mind, we're writing to suggest some concepts for tie-ins to Hanson's upcoming album release:

  1. With the title of the new album slated to be, "This Time Around," the guys could host a show tracing the greatest come-backs in musical history. NOTE: Aerosmith's Steven Tyler is a personal friend of the band's and a long-time hero. ::grin::
  2. Making the Video—How much do we love this concept for a show? 'Nuff said.
  3. Hanson Scrapbook . . . retrospective. We know you had one for them when they came to do the Live @ the Ten Spot in 1998, but it was a great idea then, and is a great idea now.
  4. Diary—A behind-the-scenes look into an artists life? Very cool!
  5. TRL - We loved it when they hosted the last time! We'd love to see them on there again.

Thanks for taking the time to consider what Hanson can do for MTV,
Amanda

Are you feeling left out because the brothers seem to be giving interviews to people you've never met before, introducing teen artists on stages you've only dreamed about, and appearing in magazines you've never even heard of—and all this time, for the past few years you have remained one of the band's MOEst loyal fans?  Well, This Time Around, you are the version of their Blue Rose Cafe originals.  And if you ever feel, "Man, am I over the top? Would Hanson actually scoff at me if they knew how much I respect and appreciate their music?"  Well, all you need to do is wander over to MTV and take a look at the clips of their online interview:

"The guy is an amazing guitarist. There's nothing you can say," Isaac told MTV News' John Norris this week of Lang.

"He's a better musician than all of us," Taylor added. "He puts us to shame."

"He puts us all to shame," Isaac echoed. "He's actually a really good keyboard player too."

And for all those in Michigan, not yet completely convinced of Jonny Lang's prodigy status—there's no need to hold your breath any longer.  The guitar god himself will once again be making some appearances in our state sometime in March. Whew!

P.S. As you've already noticed, Island Def Jam is promoting Hanson appearances once again. ::grin::

My thoughts on the Bravo video clip (from where else? Hanson Hotel!):

  • Why didn't I take German? Who do I know who speaks German?
  • Must those announcers speak so loudly?
  • There is an inverse relationship between Zac's size and the amount of time his brothers spend interrupting him in conversation . . . hmmm, coincidence? ::grin::
  • This Time Around, Zac is now Taylor's age when MON was released . . . and he's answering questions about voice changes ::gasp::!
  • Taylor still uses the most superlatives when referring to fans. (Right back at ya', Tay!! hehe)
  • Isaac's haircut? Do we need more evidence that accidents can sometimes lead to the most amazing discoveries? (c;

I found this really cool quote that I had to scratch down immediately so now it's barely legible, but I think you'll see why I wanted to share it with you:

For the common things of every day
God gave us speech in a common way,
For the deeper things we think and feel
God gave the poets words to reveal; but
For the heights and depths that have no reach
God gave us music, the soul's own speech.

I normally don't remark on page anniversaries or the history of the site since you never know when a person is visiting the site for the first time.  At the same time, I just realized that today is the 2-year birthday of "a hidden life."   Thanks to everyone who has visited this humble page from the time it had AOL Member space until now.  For those who recently stumbled here, you were spared the spinning globe . . . yes, that was the first image to ever welcome visitors in the early days.   (c;

I'm relieved to see that I qualified the Island Def Jam information by saying "possible appearances" . . . since the music group that welcomes both DMX and Hanson (amusing, huh?) has chosen to revise the "What's New" section, removing some previous date information.

January 8, 2000
When I heard about the possible appearance dates as listed on the Island Def Jam site, I couldn't help but feel nostalgia about the timing. Most obvious, the May 9, 2000 release date for the next album is the millennium equivalent of May 6, 1997, aka "Hanson Day" (Although this "holiday" name smacks of cheesiness, it's also the release date of Middle of Nowhere for those suffering from long-term memory loss). In the vein of tradition, Hanson is scheduled to appear on Letterman the night before, May 8th--as they did in 97 and then again in 98 for 3 Car Garage.  The May 9th appearance on Rosie is a little late to parallel the band's first year in music history.   This time their appearance comes on the day of the album release. However since Rosie is no longer filming live and is now taping her shows, the guys' actual taped performance may be closer to their first appearance--who knows for sure (Are you following me so far?). (c;  Can we walk down memory lane without forgetting to mention the May 8, 1998 appearance of Hanson on Live @ the Ten Spot?  With the release of the current album throwing fans back to the timeline they've so closely followed, I'm making plans to be at Paramus Park mall on the morning of Wednesday, May 10th.  I heard Sears was having a sale!! ::chuckle:: (May 8th is also my dad's birthday—it's always easy for me to remember for some reason . . .(o=)

What about LarryLand? I was hesitant to add this group to the weird associations page because I'm skeptical about Hanson's "coincidental" relationship with the band.   LarryLand is represented by Christopher Sabec and Triune . . . hmmm, they sound vaguely familiar. ::grin::  This band also seems to share a photographer, Taylor Crothers, with the musicians featured on this page. LarryLand is sort of like Athenaeum:   Hanson works with people who have a vested interest in promoting these bands.   Not that there's anything wrong with that. Although the guys have been promoting LarryLand on their official site, I am reminded that Hanson really have never breathed a word about Swirl 360—also a Triune client . . . so draw your own conclusions.. (c; My first thoughts on LarryLand were that they seem to have a sense of humor, while infusing their lyrics with real emotion—in the vein of Admiral Twin, only more European.    (Thanks Cristina for prompting me to share my thoughts on LarryLand!).

Beck is a genius!!  That alone should signal his Hanson 24/7 status.  However, since I completely blanked in including him before, I have to send a huge thank you to Rachael for finding every single possible connection between Hanson and this brilliant musician.  And with the Grammy nominations recognizing the amazing musical talent of Santana, we can't forget his connection to Hanson. This supernatural revelation comes to you from Amanda!! Enjoy!!

Good-bye 1999!  Good-bye "Peanuts"!  In the first issue of Newsweek for 2000, the following passage about cartoonist Charles Schulz's decision to retire gives even deeper meaning to "Lucy" from MON:

Schulz, a devout Christian, imbues "Peanuts" with gentle lessons in faith, hope and charity . . . the "Peanuts" gospel means lessons in life.  As cartoonist Bill Mauldin once put it, "Love thy neighbor even when it hurts. Love Lucy."
—Sharon Begley

I can't think of a better reminder of the hope we celebrate in the New Year than this. Happy 2000!!
