Carman Yo Kidz! The Vidz!

What is this video about? It is a compilation of songs from Carman's "Yo Kidz!" CD series. Carman is fairly well-known in Christian music for his catchy children's songs with a message, in addition to other projects. The video contains 5 "sketches" and even an early "Veggie Tale" piece (For those into these lovable and wacky video characters.). The entire Hanson family appears in the video. Only Mr. Hanson and Zoe are missing (Zoe's absence can be explained by the fact that it was released in 1994. (c:). Many of you know that I have long carried a soft spot for a Hanson/gospel music connection. I may have mentioned wistfully in a letter that I can see Isaac having a successful career in Christian Contemporary Music. Okay, okay, I know some of you are cringing right now. It's just that I feel as though the Hansons have been put in a position of influence, to quote from the story of Esther, "for such a time as this." Enough said.

Taylor plays David in the classic story of when this shepherd boy faces Goliath. The video gives it a modern twist by telling it as if it were a sporting event, complete with reporters, cheerleaders, and fans. The song that plays during the entire scene is called, "Sling Bang Boom" (Sound familiar, like a title from an early album by a well-loved band, perhaps. hmmm . . . Don't worry kids, in this "TV-G" video, Goliath's blood does not start flowing even after his heart stops pumping. I also noticed that a character in another skit on the video, is referred to as "Lonely Boy" in the credits. It's a small detail, that caused me to make a mental note . . .(c:)

I would love to hear a certain web authors' comments on Taylor's attire in this video. He is wearing a coarse, multi-colored tunic that is tied together with a rope, bathrobe-style. You can also see that he is shod in the most adorable (This word will come up again since it applies so frighteningly well to this video.) sandals. To complete the look, in "Karate Kids"-style, he's sporting a purple headband. Before David faces Goliath, we see him step into the giant footprint of the big G-man, which must have inspired the creators of a movie about another giant beginning with the letter G since I've seen a similar scene in promotions for that big summer movie. Did I mention that Taylor is lip syncing with 3 back-up singers who appear to have been big fans of "The Supremes"? Since he is facing the man who has been taunting his people for 40 days, Taylor, eh, David tries to inspire fear in the giant with fierce facial expressions.

The Biblical account says that David took 5 stones for his slingshot before his face-off with Goliath (in the video, he has 3 stones, but you can check out I Samuel 17 for the full story.). The 5 stones are not just in case he misses and needs back-up ammunition, but because Goliath had 4 sons and David planned to kill them all with only one shot each. Whoa, courage, you think? Although, when David's stone hits Goliath squarely in the forehead, the giant falls forward, not backwards as you might expect, to indicate that the battle belonged to the Lord (Just my running commentary on this exciting story.). When the giant falls, you will not be able to stop laughing when you hear "David" say, "What was that you were saying, Big Shot?!" You will also get a chance to see Tay demonstrate karate kicks and even dance a little (Nothing like his "Oddville" moves, but . . .). As he winds his slingshot 'round and 'round and 'round before the stone is released, you might just think he's practicing for the "Where's the Love" video. hehe

So what is Isaac up to in this video? Can I just say that he is looking even cuter than those pictures from "The Early Years" in The Official Book by Jarrod Gollihare? (BTW, the video was shot at about the same time as the denim shirt picture on page 7 and the 2-page black and white picture on pages 12 and 13.). He looks like a honey in a "Press Box" wearing a button down shirt, a press hat, a tie and a vest. The entire scene is narrated by Isaac, the reporter. He sings into an old-fashioned microphone. You can imagine that his expressions are quite animated as Isaac watches the giant taunt his brother and throw large objects at him.

What about Zac? He is in the crowd wearing a bright blue shirt and drinking Sprite. In slow motion you can see that the Z-man is just as full of zest and enthusiasm as you've come to know him to be ~ jumping up and down, pumping the air, shouting, etc. ;-D I forgot to mention that all of the boys have the same, very blond, just above the ears, almost one-length hair cut.

What about the rest of the family? Let me begin by thanking those Hanson Family Pages web authors, I was able to clearly identify all the family members from the crowd shots in this video without even blinking. Mrs. Hanson is holding Mackie and is between Avery and Jessica. Avery is sitting right next to Zac. Mrs. H and a 5-month-old (?) Mackie are both wearing sunglasses. Mac also has on a really cool red hat. Mrs. H's hair, as you already know, is long and wavy, but I didin't realize that she also wears bangs (Not that it's that important, just an observation.). I caught all of this in slow-motion. The Hansons are sitting under a person holding a "John 3:16" sign. Since Mrs. H, Zac, Jessie, Avie and Mac are pretty much altogether, sometimes the still frame looks like a snapshot from a family reunion softball game or something. There is a goofy guy who gets captured in the frame-by-frame motion casting such nutty poses that it makes me laugh. You will have to check him out in the crowd yourself if you get a chance to see this video.

It's adorable (Yep, there's that word again. ;-D) to see Mrs. H cheering, "Yay David!" when the giant is finally down for the count and some girls put a silky, white "I am the boxing champion of the world" robe on Taylor while he celebrates his (with a little help from God, of course.) victory.

In closing, as you can see, I thoroughly enjoyed this video. I would highly recommend it, if you're a Hanson fan from way back (This reminds me of the recent radio interview on hansonline. I couldn't stop laughing when I heard one caller refer to herself as a HUGE Hanson fan - or something like that - and then proceeded to ask the band what their early musical influences were. Just as I was about to say, "Come on! I could answer that," I hear Taylor saying something to the effect of, "If you've been a fan from way back, I mean a psycho fan, you would have known the answer to that question. Early 50's and 60's rock and roll music, etc., etc." [grin])

Here are the words to the chorus of the song that Isaac and Taylor lip sync:

I don't know, what you gonna' do.
(Taylor pointing menacingly in the direction of the camera.)
I don't know, what you gonna' do.
I beat the lion, the big boy.
I beat the bear.
Nobody wasn't looking.
When, nobody didn't care.

Nobody's gonna' go about scaring God's people,
especially not you!
You better put up! Shut up! Face the doom!
Sling Bang Boom!
Sling Bang Boom!
