This is a page of obscure associations I've come across in connection to the band. Feel free to contribute!!

Note:
In alphabetical order by first word. If you use Ctrl+F on a PC or "apple"+F on a Mac, you can search for a specific word on this page.

adam schlesinger — A songwriter who has worked with Fountains of Wayne, Ivy and Swirl 360 (Christopher Sabec's other brother project).  Schlesinger wrote That Thing You Do—according to an interview he did, he was originally hired to work with Hanson in the song writing process for Middle of Nowhere. However, he had to tour with Ivy, so he got to hang out with the boys a bit, but they didn't write any songs. Imagine if he did write songs with them that ended up on the record...Hanson would sound much more Beatles-ish because that's what most of his stuff tends to sound like.

Erin, you are my eyes and ears on the Internet!!   Thanks!

albert einstein — This is a complete no-brainer for true Hanson fans (The irony of this sentence is pretty annoying, huh? ::grin::).  Of course, the genius connection is self-evident . . . however, it doesn't end there.  His image appeared briefly in the original cut of the MMMBop video.  Taylor shares a birthday with this man. Blah, blah, blah -- old news. As if this wasn't enough, according to "Pop-up Video," a crew member briefed Hanson on the Theory of Relativity between takes during the shooting of the "Where's the Love" video.

"Not everything that can be counted counts, and not everything that counts can be counted." — Albert Einstein

allman brothers band, the — The association begins with John Popper, a collaborator on Hanson's album, This Time Around.  His band, Blues Traveler, opened for The Allman Brothers Band several years back and John is the front vocals man for an affiliated band called Frogwings, featuring guitar virtuoso Derek Trucks, who has very long blond hair (mid-back) and he is but 20 years old.

Only from, none other than, the generous Traci! ::grin::

andy warhol

  1. Hanson appeared in Interview magazine- formerly titled Andy Warhol's Interview as it was his magazine in the 70s and 80s.

  2. In the Spin Magazine article about Hanson, they went to the Andy Warhol museum.

  3. Rick Ocasek. Any true fan (hehe) knows that Hanson started to work with Mr. Ocasek for TTA before they decided that they wanted to go in a different direction. Rick and Andy Warhol were friends.

Serena, I'm at a loss for words. Thanks for sharing this amazing connection with us!

athenaeum — Guess who shares a photographer with Hanson?  Yes, Athenaeum's photographer, Marina Chavez has also worked with Hanson.   She is listed in the Tour Program under "Photography."  Is it a coincidence that Hanson mentions "a new band recently added to the Hanson playlist, Athenaeum" in MOE3, which is also the tour issue?  hmm

Erin very generously shared this with me . . . Thanks!

baha men — On Boomerang, Hanson did a cover version of the Baha Men's "Back to the Island." When Steve Greenberg first saw them singing this song, he thought the guys were kissing up to him, since he used to manage the Baha Men in the early '80s. Hanson told him that they had been covering the song for years. Then, the Baha Men ended up opening for Hanson at their Hollywood Bowl and Shoreline Amphitheatre concerts. Plus, they are on the same record label. Weird coincidences.

Erin, this astute contribution is all yours!   You rock!

beck — His last name? Hansen. Hanson's last name? Duh. His dad? David Campbell; who worked with Hanson on MON.   And the new album? David Campbell again. Who's DJ Swamp? He works with Beck. He is said to be Beck's alter-ego. Who's mixing parts of the new album for Hanson? DJ Swamp. Who was in the same studio recording Midnite Vultures when Hanson was there? Beck. Who, according to rollingstone.com, played mean tricks on Hanson involving, namely, fake dog doo? Beck. Who was recently named by Isaac (or who we know as Isaac at hanson.net) as the maker of one of his favorite albums of the year? Beck! Woohoo! Beck's the man! *lol* Did I just say that? Oh my. And finally, for those who didn't already know, Beck and Hanson have both worked with the Dust Brothers on past albums.

Rachael's sense of humor contributed this brilliant information!  Thanks, my dear!!

ben folds — Of course, on tour Hanson covered "Kate" by his band, Ben Folds Five. And according to Wall of Sound, Hanson was planning on working with Ben on the 2001 studio album, but scheduling conflicts tragically prevented this would-be momentous collaboration.

celine dion — She sang a song ("The Reason") co-written by Mark Hudson, who worked with Hanson.    Besides, who can forget about her amazing contribution to the movie, Titanic—the "Heart Will Go on" song—while Hanson also worked on a song for that movie or was it the sequel. (River video)::smirk:: (From Karen)

Marjan adds that Celine recorded a song by the name, Where is the Love?  Sound vaguely familiar somehow? (c;

cheap trick — Follow the path of these winding connections: The band sings the theme song to "That 70's Show." One of the stars of this show, Ashton Kutcher, hosted VH1 "The List" with Hanson. Ashton also starred in "Dude, Where's My Car" which Isaac mentioned as enjoyable (especially for guys). Not to mention, Zac sang lead on the cover, "I Want You to Want Me," live in concert during the 2000 tour.

Megan, you rock! Thanks.

danica mckellar— If you've never watched "The Wonder Years" you missed out on some beautiful television moments. Anyway, Danica played Winnie, the "on again/off again" girlfriend of the main character, Kevin. In real life, as an adult, she is not only a mathematician, but an independent film maker. One of her films includes the title, "Speechless."

dave matthews — This winter, my friend and I went to hear one of the professors from our school (Calvin College) speak about popular music and its impact on teens.  He had tickets to see Dave Matthews in concert and referred to Dave Matthews as a musical genius who raises good questions, but still isn't quite sure of his answers.  After the lecture, we chatted and he mentioned that he thought that Hanson was very gifted musically, but felt uncomfortable by the emphasis placed on their budding sexuality to sell the music.  hmmm . . .  None of this explains Hanson's connection to Dave Matthews.  But most fans know that they are connected through none other than Christopher Sabec.  Read more about when Amanda raises the Dave Matthews' Hanson conspiracy theory. (Another huge thanks to my buddy!!)

"I'll lean on you and you lean on me and we'll be okay." — DMB

desmond child — We all know he's listed in the credits for Weird.  But did you know that Amanda Marshall, a Canadian singer/songwriter, also co-wrote with Desmond Child for her second CD, "Tuesday's Child"?  I bet you didn't, because it was news to me when Kerry K. wrote in to let me know about that.  Very cool.

Desmond has also collaborated with, ::gasp:: Aerosmith.  (c:

elliot scheiner — The Eagles and Fleetwood Mac's live album was produced by Elliot Scheiner, who also produced Hanson's live album.

Another thanks to Karen!

god only knows — Hanson sang this Beach Boy song in tribute to Brian Wilson at the 2000 Songwriters Hall of Fame Induction.  These liner notes from my copy of PET SOUNDS give this track an even richer quality that I'm sure will enhance your appreciation as well:

Just before we did God Only Knows, Carl [Brian's brother] and I had prayer sessions asking the Lord for guidance and maximum love vibes for this crucial single.  It was the first time that anyone ever used the word "God" in a commercial song . . .  at least this is what we were told.   During the production of PET SOUNDS, I dreamt I had a halo over my head.  This might have meant that the angels were watching over PET SOUNDS.

This album is personally from me to you,
Brian Wilson
Los Angeles, CA
March, 1990

ja'Marc davis — This man is not only a fellow Tulsa musician, he has been mentioned in Hanson's Official Book and the jacket cover to 3 Car Garage.   ". . . the boys started taking dance lessons under the direction of Ja'Marc Davis, a local dancer." (14)  "Ja'Marc Davis - guitar, track 9 (3CG).   Check out his band's website, Raze.

Amanda . . . another fabulous contribution!

jenny labow — This Tulsa singer has a round-about connection to Hanson through MOE5.  In "itznewz" Hanson mentions having the opportunity to see a movie called Chillicothe "that was written and directed by some friends from Tulsa.  The comedy was about four single guys and their search for themselves, but mainly a search for the right girl."  Could it have been Jenny? From her bio, you can read that "Labow has also flexed her acting talent in Chillicothe.  This independent film made it to the 1999 Sundance Festival and contains two of Labow's songs . . ."

jerry garcia — Again, Albertanians should have no trouble making the leap from The Grateful Dead to the beloved trio. First of all, Oklahoma Today, introduces Christopher Sabec (Hanson's manager . . . as if I even needed to mention this!!) with these words: "a young music attorney and Grateful Dead follower" (p.25 "Oklahoman of the Year", Feb/Mar 1998). And for those fans who are just waking from hibernation, Hanson performed with Bob Weir, a surviving member of The Grateful Dead this year in a benefit to protect the Wetlands in New York.    Jerry Garcia — for non-Dead-headers — was an esteemed member of this legendary band.

"You do not merely want to be considered just the best of the best. You want to be considered the only ones who do what you do." — Jerry Garcia

lenny kravitz — This connection sounds a lot like Six Degrees of Separation, but bear with me...I found it interesting. In my History of Rock and Roll class, we were watching this video on Woodstock and it showed Sly and the Family Stone doing "I Want to Take You Higher." The lead singer, Sly, was decked out in '60s clothing and he did this clap where he stomps his feet and claps really fast over his head. Every time I see Lenny Kravitz in concert, he does the exact same clap. So, Lenny and Hanson have the same influences, plus they both like each other's music. =)

Erin, another awesome observation, my dear!!  Merci!

kate hudson — Kate hudson is Mark Hudson's neice.  Mark produced two of Hanson's albums out now. Plus Hanson sang "Kate" this summer [on tour].  Could it be that they were dedicating it to their new favorite hot actress? They seemed to like "Almost Famous."

A huge round of applause for Kat!

matt franco: And, just for those three -- I know you're out there -- other combination Hanson/New York Mets fans in the entire world besides me (Jackie's editorial: The '86 Mets were the best team ever! Ron Darling was pretty neat! (c;), an extra added bonus (sort of Tinker to Evers to Chance -- baseball fans will get that reference):

Hanson -- album tracks produced by Mark Hudson -- whose niece is Kate Hudson-- whose step-father is Kurt Russell -- whose nephew is Matt Franco,"utility man" for the New York Mets (though presently down in triple-A).

That one's out of the park, Ann!!

monty python and the search for the holy grail — Here's a test for die-hard fans. Can you detect the 24/7 in this transcript from the movie:

BEDEVERE: And what do you burn, apart from witches? FOURTH VILLAGER: ... Wood?
BEDEVERE: So why do witches burn?
SECOND VILLAGER: (pianissimo) ... Because they're made of wood...?
BEDEVERE: Good.

[PEASANTS stir uneasily then come round to this conclusion.]

ALL: I see. Yes, of course.
BEDEVERE: So how can we tell if she is made of wood?
FIRST VILLAGER: Make a bridge out of her.
BEDEVERE: Ah ... but can you not also make bridges out of stone?
ALL: Ah. Yes, of course ... um ... err ...

Thanks Cate! You're a real sharpie!

phish — This band not only shares an official photographer with Hanson, Taylor Crothers, but they have also aligned themselves with the Oklahoma trio in a more dramatic way.  Isaac mentioned that this band covered MMMBop in a sound check once.

Rachael made this brilliant connection!  Thanks!

santana — What a legend! On his newest album, Supernatural, this musician teams with both Dave Matthews and the Dust Brothers.  For those who don't know the Hanson connection these men carry check out this page or the eyewitness section.

Thanks to the irrepressible Amanda for this association!!

scott hogan — Hanson's bass guitar player appears to be someone who might just live next door to you.  Well, in fact, my friend Karen attended his rival school and graduated only one year before Scott did.  She found this intriguing article (Scroll down, the article is near the bottom of this link.) about him in a local New Jersey paper, The Daily Record, "Music Hanson Player from Morris Has Passion for Jazz." (I'm also a graduate of a NJ high school, but my school was much further north—near the Paramus Park Mall.)

A big thank you to Karen for sharing this!

shannon curfman — Self-respecting Hanson fans will know that Jonny Lang plays guitar solos on this phenomenally talented 15-year-old's album Loud Guitars Big Suspicions. Shannon is also from Jonny's hometown. Yet another of this musician's degrees of separation can be found in the by-lines of her title track (the title is a line taken from "Hard to Make a Stand"), it was co-written by Sheryl Crow--a Hanson hero, perhaps? Is it only a coincidence that her first name anagrams to "Hanson" with only an "N" to spare? Well, if not, it's oddly notable that the letters "HAN" appear across her CD in orange, part of her first name, of course. (c;  And recently, Hanson seemed to perform a cover found on her album, "The Weight," when they jammed with the surviving members of the Grateful Dead in Pennsylvania. A clip from this show can be found on hanson.net. Where will the connections end? (Laura? Studded corduroys?) ::grin::

sister hazel — This band has a track on their Fortress album that shares a title and a lyric with a Hanson song. Their 10th number, "Save Me" asks, "Won't you sa-a-a-ve me-e-e?" A number of artists, including Queen, have recorded a song with this title.

Thanks Magick! And also from Winona:

From the same album, Fortress, the song "Strange Cup of Tea" (coincidentally, right before "Save Me") sounds much like "Day Has Come." I dare you to listen to the chorus and not start singing "Well, the day has come..." It's eerily familiar. My husband, who hadn't heard "Day Has Come" before that, upon listening to "Strange Cup of Tea" for the first time, said, "That sounds Hansonesque!"

sky coaster — Lately the Discovery Channel has been running some specials on rollercoasters. I learned that when Hanson did Stupid Stuff on the TT&MON video, they actually had to learn a few skydiving tips before taking the plunge on the sky coaster. The little red pull tab is a real life rip cord on those blue striped harnesses they're wearing.  It takes about 60 seconds to get to the top—which is a long time when you think about being hauled up 250 feet into the air, dangling at the end of a rope, staring at the ground the whole time. Yikes! (A big thanks to Ronnie who let me know that in the video, Hanson rode the Xtreme Skyflyer—which is really more of a bungee-jump—at Canada's Wonderland. The band discovered this ride after their Psykoblast performance.)

sly and the family stone — A choir directed by Rose Stone of Sly and the Family Stone will back vocals for Hanson's new record. Sly and the Family Stone sing, "Everyday People."   Hanson used to do a cover of "Everyday People" to a background tape. How fulfilling it must be for them to work with someone that they have admired for so long.

Thanks Erin for this amazing connection!

sound of music — Not only do the von Trapps and the Hansons have 7 kids in each of their families, they are also both very musical. (How amusing is the idea of Taylor belting out, "I am 16, going on 17 . . ."? ::smile::)  But, you suspected that I'd come up with something else, didn't you?  Check out the phrase that appears below Hanson's lyrics, "Jam 'N Bread Music, admin. by Heavy Harmony Music (ASCAP)."  Doesn't that sound like a line from a song heard in The Sound of Music? "Doe—a deer, a female deer, ray—a drop of golden sun . . . tea—a drink with jam and bread . . ."  Hanson's use of the phrase plays on the double meaning of "jam" and "bread"—apt and witty.

stephen king — One of his more recent novels - The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon - has a Hanson reference. Briefly: a girl, lost in the woods, has MMMBop going through her head at one point in the story. And as if that wasn't enough, Secret Windows, which is mostly a collection of Stephen King "writing about writing" - shorter essays, or transcriptions of talks he's given - that sort of thing . . . well, the last selection in the book is an actual short story, called "In the Deathroom." On page 422 of the book, almost the very end of the short story, contains this sentence:

"Heinz was screaming about something, words, maybe, but to Fletcher he sounded like a girl of about ten screaming at the sight of a singing idol - one of the Hansons, perhaps."

Thanks Ann!! You're a genius.

stone temple pilots — Isaac used to play "Interstate Love Song" on the guitar for crowds in Tulsa when they would play local shows (from the Official Book).  The tie goes further than that, since this band shares the prestigious honor of being included in "The Top 10 Sibling Videos of All Time" along with, guess who?  Yes, could it be, Hanson?

Thanks Erin for this great observation!

"If you should die before me, ask if you could bring a friend." — STP

taylor crothers, c.  — This man has photographed so many of our favorite musicians, including yeah . . . Hanson, that all I can do is refer you to this amazing slide show. (Compliments of Amanda who found it and shared it with me.  You're pretty fly, Aurora!!   ::grin::)

tom petty and the heartbreakers —- According to Isaac in the "From Us To You" section of hanson.net, "The Heartbreakers were originally signed by Leon Russell's record company which was based out of Tulsa, OK" and this classic band was recording down the hall from Hanson during one of their 2002 studio sessions.

web pages that suck — "Is it ever okay to use large images?" In their web design book, Vincent Flanders and Michael Willis ask this question and answer it this way:

"There are at least two situations where it's okay to use big images: (Only one concerns us.) My 13-year-old daughter is a perfect example.  She'll wait forever to see pictures of this group called Hanson (see, it's a fan site). But the only reason she'll wait forever is because she's totally convinced—along with two million other girls—that she's going to marry Taylor Hanson." (p. 71)

Thanks to Amanda for this eagle-eyed discovery!!
