So you wanna write for PULP, huh? Well you can. We're currently looking for submissions for Issue 4, which is tentatively slated to be published on April 20, our first themeless, general interest issue of PULP. (As if there's such an animal.) In this issue, we're looking to bring PULP both visually and editorially closer to the realm of magazine than newsletter, and we'd love to have your help. Please read everything below VERY CAREFULLY before you submit. We're looking for some very specific things, and we want your piece to be read and considered seriously. So what to magazines have? They have departments, fool. And we'd like you to help us fill 'em up. We'll be looking for submissions for the following departments:
The Fiction Corner: OK, so we probably won't call it this in the actual PULP, but it gives you a nice, clean picture of what we're looking for. We're looking for fake stuff. Fiction. Of the Hanson variety. Keep it short. Between 100 and 500 words. No more, no less. It can't be published anywhere else. Tips:
Talk of the Town: Have you ever read The New Yorker? Well you should, OK? But they have this thing in the front of the magazine called Talk of the Town that is the single most brilliant news-oriented commentary section of any magazine on the face of the whole entire earth. We're not kidding. Naturally, we're jealous, and we want our own, except we won't call it Talk of the Town, see? And we'll make ours be about Hanson. So. We're looking for short, NEWS-ORIENTED commentary pieces. But there's no Hanson news, you're saying. Yeah well… the news is that there's no news. See what we're sayin? God willing, we've got an album coming. We've got a lawsuit. We've got girlfriends. We've got movie soundtracks. There's always news, baby. Go check Hanson Hotel. We promise you'll find some. Oh, and we like gossip too, in case you were wondering if that sort of thing is off limits. It's not. What's up at Hanson.net? At the Hansonline boards? Seen a wacky website lately? Stuff pissing you off? We want short commentary, 100 to 350 words, no more. Tips:
The How-To: Ten Ways to Make Taylor Hanson Marry You. Ten Hanson Books You Must Own. Fifteen Easy Steps to Converting a Hanson Hater. How to Throw Your Very Own Album Release Party. Must-Haves for Your Hanson Concert Wardrobe. You getting the picture? Tell us how to do stuff. They're called service articles, and every magazine has 'em. Share your Hanson knowledge with the world, and be cute about it. Shoot for between 500 and 800 words. Tips:
The Back: We're looking for two or three mid-length nonfiction pieces for the back of the magazine. They can be pretty much anything: A Q&A with an author or a webmaster you admire. A personal essay about your own quest as a Hanson-inspired musician. A piece that compares Middle of Nowhere to This Time Around in a brainy, musically informed way. A rant about why you love being a Hanson fan, why you love Zac's hair, why you think Ike is the coolest Hanson. Tell us the story of how you rescue Hanson albums from used CD stores or how you've seen 2,000 concerts and met Hanson 1,000 times. Please DO NOT send us these pieces directly. Send us an e-mail with a pitch, or a proposal, of what you'd like to write, or what you'd like to send us. Be very specific, and very detailed about your piece. Include a title and a proposed word count. Also, please include any kind of writing sample. It doesn't need to be about Hanson. Tips:
How to Submit: Send all submissions and proposals to submissions@brightandbeautiful.org. If you're sending a completed piece, please copy it into the body of the e-mail AND attach is as a Microsoft Word compatible document (.doc). Please, for our convenience, do BOTH of these things. Please include your full name, the title of your piece, the TYPE of piece you're submitting based on the above categories, and an e-mail address where you can be easily reached. Notes: Due to space limitations, we CAN NOT ACCEPT every submission we receive into PULPhanson. We reserve the right to refuse any piece for any reason. Please do not submit pieces that are already posted on a website. If you do want to submit a piece that's been posted elsewhere, please take it down BEFORE you send it to us. We reserve the right to edit any accepted pieces for length or content. Please have all of your submissions to us by April 6. |
