Yeehaw: Bang Bang Boom at the Calgary Stampede - katiebae's Moffatts Concert Review

Well, I did it. I went to see the Moffatts. The quintisential hometown band. They're Calgary's golden boys, so I guess it's sort of what it's like to live in Tulsa. I even saw them at our yearly summer festival, the Calgary Stampede. Yep, I'm seeing Riverfest parallels here, folks. Of course, it wasn't nearly as hot in Canada.

Last time I saw the Moffats live was last summer. It was pre-Submodalities release, so they played they poppy, 'girl in your dreams' love songs. Hearing them play those songs then, it sounded forced, like they were on the brink of some great change, and they were just playing those songs because that's what the audience knew.

Fast forward to July 2001. We've established that the Moffatts are now a rock band. But their brand of rock is not 50's and 60's influenced, Hanson power-pop. It's Kurt Cobain influenced, early nineties, produced by Bob Rock brand of rock.

Honestly, I was kind of bored the first few songs. It was just a little too mellow for my taste. Then again, it could be since I don't own Submodalities, I only knew about 7 songs. Yeah, I know I suck. But I think I'm going to have to purchase it now, so that's a good thing. The best part of the show was the last three songs. They covered Led Zepplin's Rock and Roll, which I have no frame of reference for, so I couldn't tell you if they did good covering it. Then, of course came 'Bang, Bang, Boom'. I realized during this song that I like Dave's voice a thousand times more than Scott's. Despite Scott's impressive vocal range, he sings through his nose. Ick. They ended appropriately with 'Misery'. That song was their biggest hit in the Great White North, and completely set the stage of Submodalities' success. Great choice to end the show.

Observations:

1.) Average age of the audience: 15. (Yep, Kate felt really really old.)
2.) Percentage of guys in the audience: Suprisingly 25%
3.) Of those guys, how many were with girlfriends: 100%
4.) Amount of money people spend on fancy digital cameras: too much
5.) Number of people singing along to their songs: 0 (Well, none that I could see, anyway. I don't know if the Calgarians just didn't want to sing along, or if they really didn't know the songs)
6.) Number of brand spanking new songs played: 4, I think. (That beats the measley 2 new Hanson songs we got at Riverfest. I don't remember much about the new songs. Only 1 stuck out, in my opinion. The lyrics went something like, "When the sun falls on your face, you will come to my embrace..." Something cheesy like that. It was a mid-tempo, ballad sort of thing.)
7.) Number of times Kate made eye-contact with Clint: 1 (Sorry, didn't palpitate the heart one bit)
8.) Number of times Dave smiled silly because a cute girl was flirting with him from a top her boyfriend's shoulders: 3 (Kate thinks Dave has an adorable smile. Not as sparkly-eyed as Zac, but cute nonetheless)
9.) Number of times Scott made love to his microphone: 0 (darn it)
10.) Number of times Scott shot a sexy, flirty look to the crowd: 679 (Woohoo)
11.) Hannah's on crack...Girl, Zac is a *way* better drummer than Bob.
