I'm Not Like Them
We know they grew up on it. I love classic rock and roll. Don’t get me wrong, I adore it. But Hanson covers it. Why? Why why why does Hanson feel the need to take a Janis Joplin song and convert it into one of their own? I know, I know, I’m sure their rendition is simply out of this world, but honestly, people. Hanson does a damn fine job by themselves, so why cover songs? My inner sense is annoying me. It’s saying, You know you love the covers. You know you’re going to have a total teenybopper moment when you hear the beginning of ‘Magic Carpet Ride’. You know you will.
Anyway, the point is, why do covers even exist? We say boy bands like ‘N Sync and the Backstreet Boys are inferior because they don’t write their own stuff. First of all, Aretha Franklin doesn’t either. I don’t think. Anyway, one might argue that having someone write a song for you and covering one that’s already been done are totally different. I suppose that’s so. And Hanson does write a large majority of the songs they perform live. But it’s the same principal. Hanson didn’t write that song. BSB didn’t write that song. Does that make it a bad song? Hardly. This particular rant is getting nowhere.
When news got out that Hanson did a cover of Cheap Trick’s classic, ‘I Want You to Want Me’, with Zac singing lead, we faltered about for words. I knew at that exact moment if he performed that at the Milwaukee concert, I would either faint or have a heart attack, not removing myself from the venue until he agreed to marry me. (I would be there for a very long time…)
As the confusion grows as to what the heck Ali is trying to say… for now, let’s just enjoy the music. Whether it be theirs or not, just keep doing the music.
